Silverfish eat fabrics, paper and other similar materials. These nocturnal insects are unable to climb smooth surfaces and are therefore a common site in bathtubs and sinks.
The silverfish does not like sunlight and usually hide in dark spaces like roof cavities, behind furniture and in rooms that they are less likely to be disturbed in. Although during infestations, they can be found in most areas of the dwelling including wall voids, sub floors and other areas.
Silverfish hitch a ride into your home in items such as second hand books, garage sale items, boxes and other items that may have been stored in dark areas. Inspecting these items closely before they enter your home is a good way to keep silverfish infestations at bay. Silverfish can live up to 4 years and during their lives they undergo moulting several times. A female silverfish lays eggs in small batches or in singles. Once hatched, the young resemble an adult silverfish. Silverfish can reproduce as young as 3 months but the usual age can vary up to two years. Although some people choose self fumigation to deal with silverfish infestations, it is always best to consult a licenced pest controller in order to treat the complete problem.
