Types of Termite Barriers recommended for homes in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley area of NSW.
Termite barriers are an important first defence against termite attack, preventing the termites from entering your building reduces the risk of termite damage on your property. A barrier can be chemical or physical depending on the type of property you have and whether it is in construction or an existing building. 1. Chemical Termite Barriers The chemical barrier is a repellent for termites and works by keeping the termites out of certain areas with the use of chemicals. Chemical barriers use insecticides to repel the termites from the perimeter of the building. Chemical termite barriers can be placed in the ground (soil) or around the base of the house (piers or slab). The active ingredient is usually Bifenthrin which is not readily soluble in water, making it perfect for termite barriers in the ground due to it's ability to withstand water and other liquids. 2. Fipronil Termite Barriers
Fipronil termite barriers are a chemical termite barrier using Fipronil as the termite bait. This termite barrier system is not a repellant, but relies on the termites taking the bait back to the colony to destroy it. The termite walks on the Fipronil which is a slow acting chemical that affects the nervous system of insects. The chemical is carried back to the colony on the feet of the termites and it begins acting once they have reached the colony. This method can be used in both pre construction and post construction buildings. 2. Pre Construction Termite Barriers
The Hunter United Pest Control pre construction termite barrier system involves the use of the Homeguard pest control system. The Homeguard system works on several levels to control termites.
